Today’s student, 30-something mom who recently suspended her massage practice due to her own arm muscle issues. She’s started swimming but is weary of straining her shoulders. And again the aha moment happened when she was floating and I held her ankles, twisting her side to side. Because we were working on the breath she would (incorrectly) lead with her head to yank herself around. Once that calmed down, she felt the twist of the body as one unit. She then commented that now she understands why her swimmer clients (coming in for massage) would complain about sore necks or shoulders, because (she realized) they were not using their whole body to catch the breath but instead twisting their necks. Bingo, now she’s got the tools she needs to relax her head and bring her mouth above the water’s surface by engaging her core.
